"Since retiring from broadcast and print journalism in 1992, Rand has generated a stream of finely crafted stories and inventive novels, such as Dadgum Martians Invade the Lucky Nickel Saloon! (2006). Among his best pieces have been his interviews with some of fantasy and sf's leading lights. Originally published in Talebones magazine and collected here for the first time are 30 fascinating glimpses inside the minds of such outstanding and best-selling creators as Kevin J. Anderson, Joe Haldeman, and Peter Straub. The stars share the spotlight with such other masters as Spider Robinson, Harry Turtledove, and, in Rand's first interview, the late Roger Zelazny. Along with insights into the assembled writers' sources of inspiration, such little-known biographical tidbits as Greg Bear's talent for illustration and the enduring influence of Lawrence of Arabia on Lois McMaster Bujold are disclosed. Complemented by a preface on Rand's interviewing methods and an interview with the interviewer, this collection is one both fans and aspiring authors will savor."

"Worth a look is Human Visions: The Talebones Interviews. Between 1996 and 2006, Ken Rand (I reviewed his Dadgum Martians Invade the Lucky Nickel Saloon! two issues ago) interviewed a wide variety of SF&F authors, from Spider Robinson to Ben Bova to C. J. Cherryh to Roger Zelazny and twenty-six more. . . This is one that deserves a place on every fan’s bookshelves."
     — Tom Easton, Analog

"Interviews with SF and fantasy writers are always popular, and this compilation includes quite a collection of them.  Some are well known names like Roger Zelazny, Tim Powers, Fred Saberhagen, C.J. Cherryh, Peter Straub, and Lois McMaster Bujold.  Others are less well known writers like Bill Ransom, Eric Nylund, and Kay Kenyon.  These are framed in narrative form rather than obvious questions and answers, which makes them more readable.  A very nice compilation."
     — Don D'Ammassa, Critical Mass
