"The first book of Rand’s two-volume compilation of short fiction, Where Angels Fear (2008), featured his edgier, more sobering tales. Here he shows off his lighter side in 38 amusing, sometimes shamelessly whimsical stories that run the gamut from allegorical fantasy to hard sf. A bookie reluctantly covers the wagers of Thor and Zeus as the pair gears up for an Olympian wrestling match. Jesus leaves his post in a heavenly card game to go on a walkabout among human mortals and intervene in a liquor store holdup. A dead detective is periodically revived from his coffin whenever his surviving partner gets into a jam. There are glimpses of the river Styx’s spectral ferryman, a priest receiving a new lease on life, and a handful of Rand’s Old West tales revolving around the Lucky Nickel Saloon. All are delivered with Rand’s characteristic manic energy and penchant for clever plot twists. Rand devotees will delight in the abundance and variety on view here, while newcomers to his work may become hopelessly hooked."
