For more than 40 years, fantasist Bruce Taylor has been entertaining readers all over the world with his masterful blend of surrealism and magic realism. Now these stories—published in such respected venues as New Dimensions, Twilight Zone, and Pulphouse—have been reprinted in a special Twentieth Anniversary edition. From the vaguely sinister adventures of Mr. M. to the "Bradburyesque" boyhood exploits of Edward, Taylor's tales showcase an imagination at once intense and gentle, absurd and cutting.

“Up to now I have seldom praised another writer’s work—but I have just finished reading a collection that has staggered me with its power and imagination. YOU MUST READ THIS BOOK! I refer to The Final Trick of Funnyman. . . 30 stories with five or six very fine tales, but with two freaking masterpieces, as rich and poetic as Bradbury at his finest. “Gregory’s Vision” and “Coming Home So Cold.” The author is BRUCE TAYLOR, and man oh man can he write. GET IT! I know Bruce but had no idea of his blazing talent. You just don’t want to miss this one. Trust me. You won’t be sorry.”
—William F. Nolan, author of Logan’s Run

“It’s important to realize that Bruce’s stories are not strange; the world is and he’s separated himself from it in order to show us new realities, with remarkable clarity and insight. I am one of his admirers and I am not alone.”
—Brian Herbert, co-author of the Dune series

“The transformational figure for science fiction.”
—Elton Elliot, former editor of Science Fiction Review

"A writer of imagination and insight, Bruce Taylor delivers a collection of stories that amazes and intrigues."
—Terry Brooks, author of The Sword of Shannara

“Bruce Taylor has earned the title of “Mr. Magic Realism” by dint of producing works that are fascinating, insightful, and downright fun to read. His fiction will make you think . . . and smile.”
     —Ben Bova, author of Orion

"These stories are brain-benders. Bruce Taylor has always owned an imagination capable of jarring the most jaded reader into a state of fascination. His tales grab me by the scruff, and I wait in suspense wondering not if he will shake me, but how. Best of all, he cares for his reader more than he cares for himself, and that's the mark of a true writer."
—Jack Cady, author of The Off Season

"The specialty of Bruce Taylor is brief, playful, bizarre stories that occupy the mysterious middle ground somewhere between fantasy and the surreal."
—Robert Silverberg, author of Dying Inside

“A very gifted short fiction writer.”
—Jeff VanderMeer, author of Dead Astronauts

  • ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Bruce Taylor (a.k.a. Mr. Magic Realism") writes Magic Realism--think Bradbury, Twilight Zone, Kafka, dreaming.  He's had ten books published since autumn, 2016 (ReAnimus Press) and will have more out by end of year and into 2019. He has been called "The transformational figure for science fiction" by Elton Elliott, former editor for The Science Fiction Review because of his blending  of Magic Realist writing techniques with Science Fiction & fantasy. Like Water for Quarks is available as an ebook from Baen Books with such writers as Ursula K. LeGuin, Connie Willis, Brian Herbert, Greg Bear and others. Bruce lives in Seattle with his partner, Roberta Gregory, and their slightly cross-eyed Tuxedo cat, Roo-Prrt,  in a vast condo with a smashing view of Mt. Rainier from their writing loft.
