Since it is a brief event, never to be repeated in anyone's lifetime, it becomes a special occasion for people in various ways. There is also a contest and one of the contestants is about to discover that there is an alien intelligence that has been dormant and is now awake. This is quite good, and from an author I'd never previously read."
