DAVID SANDNER & JACOB WEISMAN
In this sequel to the novelette Mingus Fingers, authors David Sandner and Jacob Weisman follow Kenny, a talented musician who learned from jazz great Charles Mingus how to “play in the soul.” Kenny has always had an affinity for rabbits and butterflies, believing that butterflies are broken souls waiting to return.
When Kenny goes missing, his brother searches for him at a crossroad and an old speakeasy, where the cold, dark shadows of spirit and music lead him to a musician who may know if Kenny is alive . . . or dead. Kenny’s brother must put his trust in his belief that the music of the living may be the only way to transform and bring back a spirit of the dead.

"Hellhounds is an evocative, richly detailed portrait of the weird, haunted heart of mid-20th-century America: the family ties that filled it, and the music that matched it beat for beat. Here’s hoping for more stories in this already memorable series."
— F. Brett Cox, author of The End of All Our Exploring
“At turns stunningly poetic, ghostly nostalgic, and darkly soul-chilling, Hellhounds is a hell of a good story. And
no one in the genre merges music and slipstream better than these two veterans of speculative fiction, whose
collaborative genius is fully on display in this spooky, unforgettable novelette about brotherly love, butterflies
and the blues. Read this one and let them take you to the land of shadows . . . maybe you won’t want to come back.”
— Michael Arnzen, author of Grave Markings
"Hellhounds by David Sandner and Jacob Weisman is the follow-up to their first novella. This short, sweet, supernatural story touches on a few myths and legends surrounding blues music. Not being too long, Sandner and Weisman’s tale does not go too deep into the subject. It, however, focuses on the relationship between Kenny and his brother and of loss. Both authors being editors of fantasy collections is evident in their ability to paint a complete picture in a shorter format. Whether a run-down hospital or a dark smoky bar, the duo’s excellent descriptive style conveys hopelessness and despair. Hellhounds is a great book for those into the metaphysical side of the blues."
— San Francisco Book Review
praise for Mingus Fingers:
"David Sandner & Jacob Weisman—blend their voices beautifully into an organic whole that reminds me of the tonality of John Kessel or Karen Joy Fowler."
— Locus
"A graceful and touching portrayal of a man with the odds loaded against him who gives his all for a child who has a shot at something more than he ever had."
— Michael Swanwick, author of The Postutopian Adventures of Darger and Surplus
"A stroll through jazz, boxing, the creative fire, and the prices of all three. Subtle, profound, and moving."
— Kij Johnson, author of The River Bank
"I read it with pleasure and admiration. Highly recommended."
— Rick Wilber, author of Alien Morning
"Mingus Fingers is one of those rare stories that gets everything right . . . I loved it so much that a few weeks after reading it I went back and read it again. I think I might have enjoyed it even more the second time."
— Charles de Lint, Fantasy & Science Fiction
